Stress Management in Higher Education

Stress Management for the University of Northampton

Staff in higher education are under increasing pressure through exposure to escalating performance targets, increasing student numbers and frequent organisational change. It is estimated that the cost of stress to the sector is currently around £70 million per annum in the UK.

The University of Northampton have purchased the Learning Industries' Stress Management e-Learning package, which is being customised to deal specifically with stress, its symptoms, effects and management within the context of the University and the higher education sector.

The package has been commissioned by the University’s Occupational Health and Safety Unit to support its work in promoting the physical, mental and social well-being of staff and reducing incidences of ill-health and absenteeism arising from exposure to workplace stress.

The e-learning course has been packaged for delivery within the University's Blackboard virtual learning environment. All members of staff can access the Blackboard system, enabling the training to be delivered across the organisation.

Dr Rob Lloyd, director of Learning Industries said: "We have developed our Stress Management package to provide a broad awareness of the causes, symptoms and techniques for dealing with occupational stress. The package can then be tailored to provide detailed guidance on seeking help and support from individual employers and to provide case studies appropriate to a specific sector."
