Mental Capacity Act e-Learning

Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust have commissioned Learning Industries to produce a bespoke e-learning package to provide essential training to staff within the Trust on the new Mental Capacity Act, which has recently come into force in England and Wales.
The Mental Capacity Act provides a statutory framework to empower and protect vulnerable people who are not able to make their own decisions. The Act enshrines current best practice and common law principles to make it clear who can take decisions, in which situations, and how they should go about this. It also enables people to plan ahead for a time when they may lose capacity.
The Act has specific implications within heath and social care and professions have a duty to implement to the act within their practice. This e-learning course will provide an understanding of the legislative powers and the requirements of the Act, along with guidance on the application and management of the Act in practice.
Richard Griffith, lecturer in Health Law from the School of Health Science, Swansea University will be acting as the main subject matter expert for the development of the package. Richard has previously contributed to the development of the National Training Pack for the Mental Capacity Act.
Specifically the package will cover: the legal framework of the Act, the 5 key principles, assessing decision making capacity, determining best interests, advanced decisions, designated decision makers, and heath care considerations. The package is being designed to provide training to staff at three levels:
- General Awareness
- Practical Awareness – non medical, health care workers
- Understanding and Application – medical professionals
This package will also be available to other heath and social care organisations within England and Wales and may be used as the basis for the development of bespoke, customised training solutions. For further information please contact Learning Industries.
