Medicines Management e-Learning

Medicines Management e-Learning for Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust

Nearly all patients are given medication as a result of a visit to hospital: it is vital to maximise the benefits of medicines whilst minimising the risks.

The Department of Health requires NHS Trusts to establish, document and maintain an effective system to ensure that medicines are handled in a safe and secure manner.

This Medicines Management module is being developed in collaboration with Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust.

It will provide training to both community and in-patient healthcare professionals; increasing their understanding of the need to adhere to relevant legislation, the importance of accountability and the benefits of safe and sceure handling of medicines.

The training will focus upon specific aspects of the Trusts Medicines Management Practice Guidance Notes (PGNs) as identified through a recent Training Needs Analysis.

Key training requirements that have been identified by the Trust that are to be covered in the package are as follows:

  • Prescribing Standards
  • Safe Handling of Medicines
  • Controlled Drugs
  • Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR)
  • Medication Incidents and Reporting
  • Recording Drug Allergies
  • Medicines storage, Security and Handling
  • Patient's Own Drugs
  • Safe Administration
  • Non-Medical Prescribing
  • Self Administration of Medicines
