All-Wales Fluid Chart e-Learning

Hydration is a vital aspect of healthcare: many factors can cause dehydration and these factors can be exacerbated when a person is unwell.

The successful roll out of the All Wales Nutritional Screening and Food Record Chart e-Learning has spawned a follow up project: developing an e-learning package to support the understanding of the importance of hydration in patient welfare.

The All Wales Fluid Record Chart e-learning will help users:

  • recognize the signs of dehydration,
  • appreciate the role of adequate fluid intake in patient recovery
  • emphasise the vital role of oral fluid intake
  • understand the need for more rigorous fluid therapy.

The package shows users how to correctly complete a patient’s fluid chart; helping to avoid recording omissions or errors; thus promoting accurate and consistent recording of vital information. The e-learning will cover daily and weekly fluid record charts; illustrating the need for accurate transfer of information between the two charts. The need for monitoring and acting on a patient’s fluid balance will be demonstrated using a series of case studies: covering both oral, intravenous and post operative patient care.

The package is to be rolled out across Wales in the coming months.
