description:

Food and water are essential for life. Eating the right food, in the right quantity, at the right time is important for the health and welfare of hospital patients. It is well recognised that meeting nutritional needs is an integral element of any treatment plan, and clinical outcomes can be affected. However, this continues to be a source of concern and patient dissatisfaction, particularly amongst older patient groups.

The Nutritional Screening and Food Record e-Learning package aims to improve staff understanding of the importance of good nutrition and hydration and the potential positive and negative impact on patient health, welfare and recovery.

The package describes methods for screening to identify patients at risk of malnutrition and the associated actions to be taken to safeguard those patients. The process and procedure for recording meals and monitoring food intake are described and illustrated, along with examples of both good and bad practice. The appropriate recording of food intake, portion sizes and quantities eaten, using a suitable food record chart are illustrated.

The package is supported with a range of case studies which demonstrate how nutritional screening, monitoring and the use of food record charts can be used to assess and support patient's nutritional welfare needs, across a range of patient groups.

The package can be used with the Learning Industries e-Learning Administration System to provide learner management, user tracking and recorded assessment or can be packaged for delivery in third-party SCORM-compliant Learning Management Systems.
